you are here: ABOUT US > OUR HISTORY

St. Augustine's Anglican Church has been part of Edmonton's Goldbar, Hardisty, Fulton and Capilano neighbourhoods for 50 years. Through other East End Anglican Churches, our roots run even deeper.

Our congregation belongs to the Anglican Church of Canada, which is "in full communion" with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada. That means that members of the ELC of C are fully welcome to participate with us. St. Augustine's also counts among its members, people from a variety of other church backgrounds. All are welcome!

Our History

St. Augustine of Canterbury in Edmonton, Alberta is a member of the world wide Anglican Church. We are a congregation first established in 1957 to serve the Capilano, Fulton Place, and Gold Bar communities. From our humble beginnings in parishioners' basements to a gym in Hardisty Junior High School, to a small church where Sunday School started out in the basement and blossomed to over 400 children, to our present day church, we now draw members from various areas of Greater Edmonton.

The history of St. Augustine's can be categorized by the names and dates of the incumbent Priests. Their service is recognized on a brass plaque in the church. They are the Reverends:

Tom Rayment, 1957 - 1958
William Elkin, 1958 - 1961
George Hollywood, 1961 - 1963
Glendon Bresee, 1963 - 1981
Robert Wild, 1982 - 1989
Daniel Ash, 1990 - 2003
Robert Peel, 2004 -

As the clergy have changed so, too, the church is changing to reflect the needs of a new generation.
